General Information

If your child has a fever and is coughing, your child may be asked to wear a mask while waiting to be picked up in the nurse's office.  This is a precautionary measure to protect other students.  Thank you for your understanding.

*H1N1 Virus (Swine) Flu Update

We have seen a number of students out with Influenza Like Illness (ILI), in all the schools. This was to be expected, we will continue to educate students on proper cough/sneeze etiquette and monitor attendance rates. We have held H1N1 clinics for high risk students in all the schools. More clinics will be held as more vaccine becomes available.

In accordance with guidelines from the CDC, not all individuals with ILI will be "tested" for the H1N1 and/or seasonal flu.  Therefore we will not be able to confirm the exact number of cases of H1N1 or seasonal flu in the community. However, it is presumably both are circulating within our community. Please note the recommendations below pertaining to school attendance and ways to promote health and wellness.

Parents and Guardians: If your child is sick, PLEASE keep your child home from school/daycare and avoid bringing the child out into the community. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has issued guidelines regarding school attendance in regards to the H1N1 (Swine) Flu. If your child has a fever (temperature over 100.4 degrees) and any one of the following symptoms: sore throat, cough, runny nose, or other related "flu like" symptoms, he/she needs to remain at home for a minimum of twenty four hours. Your child may return to school after they are symptom and fever free (without the use of any medications, such as Tylenol, Advil or Motrin) for 24 hours. If you have any questions, please call your child's school nurse or Karen Rufo.

The best defense against the H1N1 and the Seasonal Flu (and other illnesses) is HANDWASHING.  Things you can do to stay healthy:

1. Hand washing, Hand washing, Hand washing
2. Avoid close contact with sick people (respect personal space)
3. Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose and mouth) If you do wash your hands before and after touching
4. Keep sick children home (see above guidelines)
5. Eat a well balanced diet, be physically active, get enough sleep, stay well hydrated and try and reduce your stress

Vision and Hearing Screening

The elementary schools,  grades 5 and 7 in the Middle Schools and grade 10 @ Natick High School have completed the state mandated vision and hearing screenings. If your child did not pass this basic screening you will receive a letter in the mail asking you to follow-up with the child's physician and/or appropriate specialist. If you receive a letter it is imperative that you return the letter with the follow-up, so this important information can be kept in your child's medical record.

Height and Weight/BMI Screening

Schools in Massachusetts are now mandated by Massachusetts General Laws to obtain heights and weights on students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10.  After obtaining your child's height and weight, your child's BMI (Body Mass Index) will be calculated and you will be notified of the results in a confidential manner.  The students in grades 1, 4 and 7 will be measured over the course of the next 2 -3 weeks. and completed by February vacation.  The High school students (grade 10) will be done on  February 2nd and 3rd.  If you do not want your child to participate in the height/weight screening, please send a letter to your child's school nurse so your child will not be screened. Phone calls will not be accepted to exclude your child from the screening.

Postural Screening

Public Schools in the state of Massachusetts are required annually to screen students in grades 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 for postural screening. The dates that each school will be conducting the screenings will be listed on this website. It is advisable that female students wear a bathing suit top and/or halter top on the date they will be screened to allow for visualization of the entire spine.

Wilson Middle School: January 11th, 12th and 19th during your child's physical education class. Re-screens will conducted on January 29, 2010.
