Dear Natick family and community members:
As with every phase of the pandemic, we must adapt and respond to the twists and turns of this virus and its changes.
The CDC now classifies Middlesex County as a red community of high COVID-19 transmission.
So, it is no surprise that we see an increase in positive cases in our schools. Some schools have seen a 50 percent increase in cases this week, and for some, no increase at all. We are still significantly below our post-December and February break case counts. But cases are on the rise and moving quickly.
The Natick Health Department and The Natick Public Schools would like to remind everyone:
- Stay home when you are sick and get tested for COVID (PCR is most accurate)
- Wear a mask:
- When symptomatic (even if you have tested negative)
- After a COVID diagnosis ( stay home for 5 days but mask for 10 full days)
- After a COVID exposure ( for 10 days)
Even though masking is optional in most indoor settings, masks are still one of the best tools we have to stop the spread of COVID-19. For communities in red, the CDC recommends indoor masking in all public settings.
I am issuing a masking advisory for the schools for the next two weeks. This is a strong recommendation to mask, as a means to keep us from needing other mitigating measures such as distancing or cessation of large group gatherings and other tactics used in other parts of the pandemic.
As much as we wish it was over, COVID-19 is still here, so please do your part to keep our community safe and healthy. Taking personal responsibility for isolation when we are ill or for masking in surges is a part of taking care of each other within this learning community.
As part of a flex mask culture, you have choices, but our commitment to each other means we need to respond to the rising case data. We strongly recommend resuming masking for the next two weeks as we monitor the surge in cases.
If you have high schoolers who are soon to participate in large gatherings of great importance such as prom, junior and senior cruises, middle school gatherings, trips, or graduation, we ask you to take the step to mask now so that these events can go on and someone does not miss out on these memories due to becoming COVID positive. Stories from our region of spread at such events held before ours inform our habits now - learn from the experiences of our neighboring towns and join us in masking for the next two weeks.
Please note: I will be instituting Tuesday evening robocalls to homes to remind staff and students to conduct their at-home weekly test and report results to the nurses' offices at your children's schools. Working together with masking and testing, we can reduce infection and spread in our community.
Thank you!
Anna

Changes Coming to Universal Free Lunch Program
Summer lunch program also ending
As you may have heard on the news, the recent appropriations package passed by Congress does not include extending the current free school lunch program past June 30, 2022. As a result we’re unable to provide universal free meals as we have the last two years, beginning with the 2022-23 school year. What does this mean for you?
NPS will return to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and our Summer Eats sites will not be available this year. Free and reduced price meals will only be offered to students directly certified for these meals or approved through a household application (available July 1). We understand that this is a big change for all, and we’re notifying you now so you’re aware you’ll need to re-adjust to meal charges after such a long time without having to worry about it. We’ll keep you updated on any other developments from our partners at DESE and the USDA.
